OKLAHOMA CITY -- Backyards became rushing waterways in northwest Oklahoma City and west Edmond Monday. Neighborhoods in the area were flooded from the overflowing Chisholm Creek.

Homeowners near N.W. 178th and Western Avenue spent the evening beginning the clean-up process.

"The water rose so fast. I do not get worried and I was worried. My heart was racing and I said 'This is very serious,'" said Austin Lowry.

Lowry helped his mother who recently had a liver transplant wade through the water to safety.

"Most of the way was knee deep, but at the highest the water was chest high," Lowry added

Water marks on walls and curtains inside homes of the Palo Verde neighborhood were around two to three feet high.

"This is the fist time a disaster like this has hit us. Never want to be in another one either," said homeowner Randy Eldridge.

Most who have damaged homes do not have flood insurance.

"This is on my own. Hopefully, FEMA comes through and helps us out on this. You're looking at probably $50 to $60 thousand worth of damage. That's my estimate. It could be more," said Eldridge.

Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief assessors made their way into neighborhoods Monday. Their team of volunteers will start work Tuesday morning.
