LUTHER, Oklahoma – More than 40 dogs were removed from a Luther home after the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office responded to a complaint call earlier this week.

An 8-year-old boy was nearly attacked and two dogs belonging to a neighbor were reportedly killed by a pack of neighborhood dogs.

"These dogs have multiple litters because they weren't fixed and many of them are under socialized because they only knew the elderly man, and these dogs have never been on a leash," Dana Huckaby with Pet Angels Rescue said.

A deputy spoke with the caretaker, Jim Howell of Luther, and discovered the elderly man has been collecting the stray dogs over the years.

Howell said when the dogs got out they were out of control and asked Sheriff's deputies he no longer can take care of them. Howell said people kept dropping strays off at his front door and that's when he started taking them in and feeding them. One neighbor said Howell is a good, responsible man and that it's the dogs that are a problem.

They do not plan on filing charges against the 72-year-old man.

"The man told us the dogs were out of control and didn't want them anymore, the dogs usually stayed in the backyard but recently started leaving when an electric fence stopped working," Mark Myers with the Oklahoma County Sheriff's office said.

Volunteers from two animal shelters helped remove dozens of dogs from the home and they also received minor wounds.

"One of our deputies was also bitten by one of the dogs, he's doing fine and getting his rabies shot," Myers said.
