OHP: 47 Killed On Oklahoma Roads In October, 2010

UNDATED -- The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has released information about the 47 people who died in traffic fatalities in October.

There were nine fewer fatalities on Oklahoma roads this October compared to last year, according to the OHP. The count for October, 2009 was 56.

Ten people ages 21 to 30 were killed, the greatest number by age group, the OHP reports. Nine people aged 31 to 40 died, and seven people under the age of 20 were killed.

Sunday was the worst day for fatality crashes with 10 reported one Sunday. Next highest was eight deaths on a Tuesday. There were six deathless days in the month of October.

The 47 deaths included five motorcyclists and two pedestrians. Twelve of the fatality crashes were alcohol-related in the opinion of the investigating officer. Thirty-nine victims were from Oklahoma. By sex, there were 30 male and 17 female victims.

Sixty-two percent of those who died in traffic collisions were not wearing safety belts at the time of the crash.

Year to date fatalities are also down in 2010, with 568 compared to 680 through November 30.
