Tulsa Fire: Smoke And Flames At Refinery Just Burning Of Excess Product

TULSA, Oklahoma -- A number of viewers called News On 6 after seeing a large fire and plume of black smoke at the Holly refinery on the west side of the Arkansas River Wednesday morning.

The Tulsa Fire Department says the smoke and flames were caused by a flare burning off excess product.

Tulsa Fire Department spokesman Tim Smallwood says the flare burned for approximately 10 minutes.

Holly said in a company statement, preliminary findings indicate that extremely cold weather caused the refinery's steam-producing boilers to shut down.

Bloomberg is reporting that spot gasoline in the Midwest rose after Wednesday's incident at the Tulsa refinery.
