OKLAHOMA CITY -- The wait is over. The Oklahoma City Zoo's new baby calf now has a name. After more than 14,000 online votes, the public has chosen Malee over Annika and Hanako. Malee won out with 72 percent of the votes.
Asha, the Zoo's 16-year-old Asian elephant, delivered the healthy 304 pound female calf on April 15th inside the Zoo's new Elephant Habitat. Sneezy, the 39-year-old father, lives at the Tulsa Zoo.
Attended by the Zoo's elephant care team and assisted by the Zoo's veterinary staff, Asha delivered her calf at 9:13 p.m. Sister and now, Aunt Chandra, almost 15-years-old watched from afar. The calf and her mom and aunt have been getting to know each other inside the elephant barn, offering guests chances to catch a glimpse of the new baby.
Weather permitting the trio have been going out into one of the yards for three to four hours a day. They typically remain viewable from approximately 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily either inside their barn or in the middle yard.
