Cowboys Conference Woes Continue

The Jayhawks' pitching staff dominated Oklahoma State and handed it another conference loss.

STILLWATER, Oklahoma -- Oklahoma State lost its fourth straight conference game with a 17-3 series-opening loss to Kansas.

The Jayhawks (26-17-1, 7-8-1) got a dominant pitching performance from T.J. Walsh (7-3) who no-hit the Cowboys through eight innings and struck out 11. He gave up only two hits in the top of the ninth that resulted in two runs.

Kansas extended its dominance to their batting as well, producing 17 runs before OSU put a runner in scoring position. Robby Price started the scoring with an RBI single in the third inning to bring Brett Lisher home. In the next at-bat, Brian Heere doubled to right field to bring Brandon Macias home. Tony Thompson added one more RBI single to bring Price home, giving the Jayhawks a 3-0 lead.

KU added to the lead in the fifth with a Jimmy Waters RBI double to center to bring Heere home. In the next at-bat, Casey Lytle hit a two-run single up the middle to bring Thompson and Waters home and extend the lead.

Tyler Lyons (3-4) continued pitching for the Cowboys (24-18, 5-11) through the sixth inning and was pulled after one hit in the seventh. Lyons gave up 10 earned runs on 15 hits and struck out seven.

The Jayhawks put the game out of reach in the seventh after scoring seven runs on seven hits.

Down 17-0 in the bottom of the ninth, OSU scored its first run on a Mark Ginther two-run RBI double to bring Tom Belza and Davis Duren home. In the next at-bat, Ginther scored on a fielding error, but Kansas retired two of the next three batters to end the game.

The weekend series continues at 2:06 p.m. Saturday in Stillwater.
