NORMAN, Oklahoma – Athletes for a Better World announced Wednesday that Oklahoma safety Quinton Carter is among five finalists for the Wooden Citizenship Cup.

The award is given annually to the nation’s best role model among college athletes. The winner is chosen by a screening committee, national group of electors and a committee chaired by Vincent Dooley, the former athletic director at the University of Georgia.

Carter has also been named as an AFCA All-American and a member of the Good Works Team this year. The Good Works team features 11 players across the nation for their extensive community service.

Carter has been an active member in the Norman and Oklahoma City communities during his years at Oklahoma. He adopted a class of four-year-olds at Norman KinderCare, and has served the SOUL Organization, the Oklahoma City Marathon, the University Center for Student Advancement and the OU Black Graduate Student Association.

The Las Vegas native also helps run a youth football camp during the summer in his hometown. The camp teaches middle school students the fundamentals of football as well as basic life lessons.

Carter is the fourth OU athlete to be name a finalist for Wooden Cup, joining Carl Pendleton from 2007, and Jackie Dubois and Jacob Gutierrez, both of whom were nominated in 2006. Dubois, who was a cross country runner, is the only Sooner to win it.

The winner of this year’s Wooden Cup will be announced at a ceremony on Jan. 25 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. The other finalists are Kimberly Reeves, a basketball play from Agnes Scott College; Greg McElroy, quarterback for Alabama; Sarah Leyman, a basketball player from Amherst College; and Daniel Crawford, a football player at Denison University.

The Wooden Cup is named in the honor of former UCLA basketball coach John Wooden, who passed away earlier this year.
