STILLWATER, Oklahoma -- Fifteenth-inning heroics from a freshman gave the No. 4 Texas Longhorns a 1-0 win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys Friday in the series opener.

After reaching on a walk, advancing to second on a sac-bunt and reaching third on a fielder’s choice, Texas (17-5) freshman Mark Payton stole home on a called second strike with two outs on the board, scoring the game’s only run.

Senior reliever Kendall Carillo (1-0) retired the next three Oklahoma State batters to end the game and record just his fifth win in his career at Texas. The right-hander from Sweetwater, Texas didn’t allow a hit in his 1.2 innings of service, while striking out two of the five batters he faced.

Oklahoma State used just two pitchers in the 11-inning contest, with Chris Marlowe (1-1) receiving the loss for the game, pitching what would otherwise be considered a “gem.” Marlowe pitched 6.2 innings, giving up two hits, one earned run and struck out 12 of the 28 batters he faced. His strikeout total combined with the nine from Mike Strong ended one strikeout shy of the conference record.

The series continues at 2 p.m. Saturday, before concluding at 1 p.m. Sunday.
