EDMOND, Oklahoma – The Edmond Memorial Bulldogs held a lead over the Southmoore Sabercats going into halftime, but were shut out in the second half on the way to a 20-12 loss.

The Bulldogs scored first after a Southmoore snap went through the back of the endzone for a safety. They then extended their lead to 9-0 when Blake Umberham scored on a 16-yard run.

Kendal Thompson got Southmoore on the board with a one-yard run in the second quarter. Edmond Memorial responded with a field goal near the end of the half, and had a 12-7 lead going into halftime.

The third quarter proved to be Edmond Memorial’s downfall. Still down 12-7, Southmoore quarterback Kendal Thompson escaped a sack, rolled out of the pocket and made an outstanding pass for a 62-yard gain. Two plays later, Thompson connected with Aaron Gustafson for a touchdown to take a 13-12 lead.

Later in the third quarter, the Bulldogs drove into Southmoore territory and threatened to retake the lead, but tailback Kameron Doolittle fumbled and the ball was recovered by Southmoore’s Ryan Long.

Andrew Long then helped the Sabercats take advantage of the turnover when he caught a screen pass from Thompson and ran 38 yards for a touchdown to take a 20-12 lead with four minutes left in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs were unable to put together another scoring drive, and ended with an eight-point loss. They will now move on to face Edmond Santa Fe Sept. 11.
