Just because the Falcons' star plays wide receiver, don't expect him to shy away from contact on defense.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Any time a sophomore starts for a varsity team, coaches have high expectations for the young player.

When Josh Turner strapped up for the Millwood Falcons two seasons ago, his coaches knew he was a special talent.

“I told him as a sophomore when nobody was looking at him ‘Son you’ve got great things on the horizon,’” said head coach Tony Henry. “He’s just one of those kids that has got it all together. He’s got the right mind set.”

As a sophomore, Turner took that to heart and has worked hard to ensure that he was a top recruit as a senior. Now that he’s the top recruit in the state, don’t expect him to rest on his laurels.

“It’s a blessing. I’m just glad I have the opportunity to be No. 1,” said Turner. “It’s just pushes me to work even harder.”

For the second year in a row, the top recruit from Oklahoma has gone south of the Red River to play for rival Texas, and opponents make sure to let Turner know they disagree with his choice. The Falcons’ star keeps a cool head when players start to talk.

“[Opponents] are coming at me like ‘You’re going to Texas?’ if I make a bad play,” said Turner. “But everyone makes mistakes.”

Turner’s combination of size and speed make him a threat on offense, but he has committed to Texas to play as a defensive back. His coaches believe that his naturally physical style of play could earn him quality time as a freshman.

“A lot of [young corners] aren’t ready to hit,” said assistant head coach Kevin Cox. “He can come in and cover and he can be physical.”

The switch to defense is one that Turner is comfortable with.

“I like defense better than offense because I like doing the hitting,” said Turner. “They think since I play receiver that I really can’t hit, but it shows on the field.”
