A southeastern Oklahoma community has agreed to purchase water from Oklahoma City.

Officials said Tuesday the Oklahoma City Water Utilities Trust approved a 5-year raw water service agreement with Coalgate, the county seat of Coal County.

Coalgate with a population of 2,000 is located south of McAlester.

Oklahoma City officials say the agreement gives Coalgate a second water source while the Natural Resources Conservation Service repairs the Coalgate City Lake dam. It allows the town to use up to 160 million gallons of water in a calendar year.

Officials say Coalgate may continue taking water from the utilities trust water supply system even after the dam repairs are completed. Town officials also have the option to renew the 5-year agreement.

Coalgate is about 116 miles southwest of Oklahoma City.
