The city of Tulsa says it's ready to take on snow and ice, and has increased its arsenal since battling the blizzards in February.

Like soldiers lined up for inspection, plows and spreaders stand at the ready for their first taste of combat in this winter season.

"We usually get through November and December without any really big issues. January and February are our big months," said Dan Crossland, Tulsa Streets Director.

Paralyzed by a one-two punch of winter weather, the city of Tulsa virtually shut down during back-to-back blizzards last February.

The city took the winter white-out as a way to re-write the blueprint for battling snow and ice.

"We've made a lot of changes and beefed up from where we were last year," Crossland said.

This year, there's more money for salt. The city has 14-to-15,000 tons on hand this year, compared to less than 10,000 last winter.

And this isn't all of it.

The massive mountains on the west side of town are augmented with additional stockpiles of salt out east. The city also bought five new snow plows, and five new salt spreaders to add to its army.

"From where we are geographically, the city of Tulsa has quite a bit of equipment for snow and ice," Crossland said.

Mayor Bartlett checked the fleet, and offered his wish for winter.

"Well, if the weather stays like this, this will all be gathering dust, but that's okay. We'll be ready for it," Mayor Bartlett said.

Another part of the city's new winter plan: hire private contractors to plow city-owned parking lots, so the city plows can get back to clearing streets.
