More than 40 Oklahoma State University medical students will provide health assessments at the Oklahoma Mission of Mercy dental clinic February 3rd and 4th at the Southeast Expo Center in McAlester.

OSU says the medical students from the school's Center for Health Sciences will assist in ensuring that people are healthy enough to receive dental treatment during the two-day clinic.

Mission of Mercy provides free dental care for patients of all ages who need but cannot afford dental care.

"The OSU Center for Health Sciences' mission is to provide rural and underserved populations with medical care," said Dr. Kayse Shrum, dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine. "We encourage our students to get involved in community services projects like Mission of Mercy that offer an opportunity to give back to Oklahomans in need."

The dental clinic will treat 1,000 patients each day on a first-come, first-served basis.

The medical students will help with medical histories, temperature and blood pressure checks, while OSU physicians consult with dentists to assess patients.

Sponsors for the Mission of Mercy are the Oklahoma Dental Association, Delta Dental of Oklahoma Oral Health Foundation and Oklahoma Dental Foundation.
