Stormy End to a Spring-Like Week

Just a quick update since I've been missing in action in the blogosphere since last week! A powerful cut-off low is providing Oklahoma with abundant rainfall… in some cases, in excess of 4 inches! That's great news for the drought-stricken northwestern portion of the state. Osage County has been another winner with some places receiving 2 inches or more of quenching rainfall. See the attached map for rainfall as of 2:30pm Friday. Even though the system is bringing a slight risk of severe weather, we ought to be thankful we aren't dealing with what is going on in Colorado: a major blizzard. We know all too well how that plays out here in Oklahoma! Paralyzing snow scenes may be playing out in your head from last year right about now!

This stormy scenario was preceded by remarkably warm, dry weather. For most of the week, temperatures topped out in the mid to upper 60s. Last Tuesday, Tulsa hit 72°! We all know what the groundhog had to say about the matter: six more weeks of winter. The question for us is, what kind of "winter" are we talking about? Check out my story on this here!

After the storms roll out of here late this evening, cooler (though not Arctic) air will settle in to our region. Temperatures through the weekend and early next week will be back to normal levels. No more 60s and 70s for a little while. The good news is: no major storm systems are expected for the next week or so. Once this drought-reducing storm system pulls away from us, a very docile weather pattern will ensue.

So, for your Super Bowl Sunday activities, you'll want to grab a jacket if you're heading outdoors. Otherwise, super weather for February will be the story, even if it doesn't feel like mid-April. Winter is settling back in, but Old Man Winter seems to be sparing us the worst for now.
