Sooners Top Arkansas-Pine Bluff For Fourth Straight Win

The OU baseball team won its fourth straight game with an 9-4 victory over the Lions.

Oklahoma baseball notched its fourth straight victory Tuesday afternoon with a 9-4 victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

OU's Max White, Hunter Lockwood and Jake Smith led the way for the Sooners as they each tallied two hits and two RBI.

Arkansas-Pine Bluff took control early scoring two runs, one off a wild pitch and another off a single by Jacob Whitney that plated Christian Weeber giving the Lions a 2-0 lead.

Jake Smith put Oklahoma on the board in the bottom of the second with a double to centerfield that scored Cody Reine.

In the third Hunter Lockwood tied the game with a leadoff homerun to left field to knot the score 2-2. OU tacked on another run as Garrett Carey flied out to left field, which allowed Chase Simpson to tag and score to give the Sooners a 3-2 lead.

OU scored three more in the fourth. With the bases loaded Lockwood was walked which brought home Ty Taylor. White stepped to the plate and knocked a single up the middle to score Jack Mayfield and Erik Ross giving the Sooners a 6-3 advantage.

Kindle Ladd came in for the Soooners on the mound in the top of the seventh as the Lions tried for a comeback. Arkansas-Pine Bluff's Sean Samsa reached first off an error by Ladd then got to second off a wild throw and to third off a wild pitch. Samsa went on to score off another wild pitch by Ladd and cut OU's lead to 6-4.

The Sooners collected themselves and scored two more runs in the bottom of the inning, one off a double by Jake Smith that scored Reine and another off a Taylor single to right that scored Dylan Raper and made it 8-4.

Max White added an insurance run for Oklahoma in the bottom of the eight. He first knocked a double to right center. A wild pitch advanced White to third and he reached home after a Chase Simpson fly out to left center making it 9-4 in favor of the Sooners.

Leo Fuentes picked up the loss for the Lions going three innings and allowing two hits and three earned runs.

OU starter Chris Burgess went one inning allowing three hits and two earned runs. Drew Harrison came in Burgess' relief in the top of the second and dealt three innings for the Sooners allowing three hits and one earned run, along with two strikeouts.

Dillon Overton saw two innings of action from the mound allowing no hits and no runs while striking out two batters. Ladd also pitched three innings for OU with no earned runs and four strikeouts.

Oklahoma is now 8-3 on the season and will continue the series against Arkansas Pine-Bluff Wednesday at noon.
