Green Country Couple Marries At Historic Blue Whale On Route 66

A Green Country couple took the plunge at a local landmark on Saturday.

Matt and Jennifer Chambers became one of a few to tie the knot at the Blue Whale of Catoosa.

"My dad built [the whale] in 1970-72," curator Blaine Davis said. "It was a swimming hole at that time, very popular."

It's no longer used for swimming, just a landmark stop along Oklahoma's Route 66.

And a wedding destination?

"It's different," Davis said. "Only four people can say they've been married at the whale."

If history counts for anything, it might actually be the perfect place to take the plunge.

"My folks were married 50 plus years," Davis said.

Davis's father built the Blue Whale out love for his bride, Zelta, some 42 years ago.

"They worked on things together and this is one of the deals they did hand in hand ," Davis said. "Maybe there's something magical about that."

The Chambers' found it to be magical, too.

The bride hooked her groom Saturday, right in the mouth of the Blue Whale.

"Not many people can say they've done this - all of them that I know of, it's lasted," Davis said.

A fairytale ending -- and a whale of a tale it is.
