In the race for U.S. Congress from the first district, incumbent John Sullivan (R-Tulsa) is running for another term.

Jim Bridenstine will challenge Sullivan in the Republican primary.

There's a lot of interest in the race among Republicans, in part because there's a viable primary opponent to the incumbent, and that's not always the case.

An unusually large crowd packed a Republican women's forum to hear the two men who want to represent Tulsa in Congress.

Sullivan was very critical of President Obama, ""The attack by the Obama Administation..." he said.

The challenger, Bridenstine, was very critical of Congress...

"And it's going to be our Congress that has given us this mess," Bridenstine said.

But most of the discussion was about the deficit; who is to blame for it - and how to fix the problem.

"This is our national security issue of our day and Congress has got to get spending under control," Bridenstine said.

Sullivan said: "We're spending too much money, it's a spending problem in DC, not a revenue problem.

The unplanned theme of the forum, spending and the deficit, reflects what voters are thinking about, according to the president of the Republican Women's Club.

"I think that's what we're interested in, the financials, where we're going, because we're not real great right now," Tulsa County Republican Women's Club president Charlotte Harrer said.

Bridenstine and Sullivan didn't attack each other, but Bridenstine was critical of Sullivan's tenure in Washington and said he didn't plan to make Congress a career.

Sullivan pointed out he's moving up the ranks in Congress and gaining political influence with time.

They agree that less government is better and both oppose what's happening in Washington, both in Congress and in the White House.
