Thousands of volunteers are rolling up their sleeves Friday to work on different projects for the Tulsa Area United Way's Day of Caring.

It's one of the largest one-day service events in the nation, and it kicked off Friday morning at the Guthrie Green, located at North Cincinnati Avenue and East Brady Street.

The United Way is kicking off its fall campaign, announcing a fundraising goal of $24.9 million. They got a head start on that goal with a $4.4 million donation raised from participating companies this summer.

The Tulsa Area United Way's Day of Caring event is the very first event to be held at Guthrie Green in the Brady Arts District.

Guthrie Green is a brand new park that's right across the street from the new Griffin Communications Media Center.

The park is named after Woody Guthrie, Oklahoma's legendary folk singer.

Organizers with Friday's event say more than 4,700 volunteers work on more than 300 community service projects for nonprofit organizations. The work ranges from painting and gardening to assembling food boxes.

Volunteers will work with one or more of the 60 agencies partnering with the United Way.

If you are volunteering with the United Way Day of Caring, we'd like to hear about it! Send photos and videos from Friday to our Share page: pics@newson6.net. Let us know where the photos were taken and what work is being done, if possible.
