Crews are laying down the sod outside and the flooring inside and finishing up the final work on a unique neighborhood in Stillwater.

The concept is called co-housing, and it's a one-of-a-kind neighborhood for Oklahoma.

"There were several of us who didn't want to leave Stillwater, and we were looking for an option that would allow us to retire here, age in peace and be a part of the community that we've grown to love," said homeowner Kay Stewart.

Oakcreek is a five million dollar co-housing senior development project on seven-and-a-half acres, and includes 24 individually-owned private homes.

Its design and purpose make it unique.

"You have all the privacy you want and you have community at easy access, just by coming out your front door," Stewart said.

The homes are designed into pods, with shared parking.

There's also a 3,800-square-foot common house, which includes meeting spaces, room to socialize, and kitchen amenities.

It's where everyone will get their mail and where they can really get know your neighbors.

"I like the idea of having close neighbors that you'll be involved with and you'll know who they are, unlike our current neighborhood, where we actually don't know some of the people who live in the houses very close to us," said Doug Sander.

At 64 years old, Sander is one of the owners and he said he's ready to downsize.

It's one of only a few co-housing neighborhoods just for seniors in the U.S.

"This will be the first one in the central part of the United States. There is one in Colorado to the west and Virginia to the east. We think we're bringing a concept to the central part of the U.S. that is going to catch on quickly," Stewart said.

Owners also have the chance to develop a network of neighbors to rely on as they get older.

"We'll be able to get all the privacy we want, but have easy access to all the friends and community that we want, too," Sander said.

The homes should be finished and ready for move-in by the middle of October.

Prices range from $150,000 to $265,000.
