An early Wednesday fire at a Grand Lake mobile home claimed the life of a toddler, the Oklahoma State Fire Marshal's Office confirmed.

Oklahoma Assistant State Fire Marshal Joanne Sellers said the home was located near Lakemont Shores, which is in a secluded area in Delaware County and located on the lake's south end.

A 3-year-old boy died in the fire, but his 4-year-old brother and mother survived.

According to Sellers, the mother and older boy were in a bedroom and able to escape from a bedroom window. The mother tried to re-enter the home to rescue the younger boy, but was unable to reach him, she said.

Investigators said the mobile home, which had several additions, did not have smoke detectors.

The fire started in the kitchen area of the home and the 3-year-old's body was found in the living room, fire investigators determined. The official cause is yet to be determined.

The Delaware County Journal is reporting the mother said she woke up to the smell of smoke and saw her 4-year-old holding a lighter.

The fire was reported about 12:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Sellers said, and four volunteer departments and the Delaware County Sheriff's Office responded.

Lakemont Shores Fire Department Chief Richard Kauffman said flames quickly engulfed the home.
