Police Baffled By Case Of Woman Allegedly Stabbed To Death By Son

Police said Tuesday, the case of Matt Stick, accused of stabbing his mother in the heart last Friday, is a most unusual case.

Veronica Stick lived with her son and husband in the Brookside area, where she worked at All Souls Unitarian Church, and was very well liked there.

A child murdering his mother, matricide, is very rare, comprising only one to two percent of all homicides.

This one has police baffled, because they really have no idea why it happened.

A YouTube video shows Matt Stick engaging in his hobby, Parkour or free-running. It's a way of moving from point A to point B that involves climbing, swinging, leaping, rolling and flipping.

The video was made in 2010, the same year Stick's Facebook page says he graduated from Union High School.

He also worked at All Souls Unitarian Church, where his mother, Veronica, worked.

Police said she left work last Friday afternoon to meet an exterminator at the house, and her son was supposed to take her back to work, but instead, the exterminator found her dead on her front porch, stabbed in the heart.

"It's unusual. That's all I can say," said Tulsa Police Sergeant Dave Walker.

When Veronica was found, her son and the car were gone.

Police found the car around 5 p.m., near 36th and Peoria, and believe Matt Stick wandered between there and 29th and Peoria for about five hours, before showing up for work two hours late, at 8 p.m.

"What we do know is we don't have the knife. It's not in the car, not recovered at the scene and wasn't on him when we arrested him, so somewhere in that time of wandering, he ditched the knife," Walker said.

If anyone finds that or his cell phone, police said they would like a call.

They said he talked to them briefly after his arrest and while some of it was strange, what he said was comprehensible.

"He's hinting that he did it," Walker said. "The words he's saying, things he's saying, it wouldn't be like you and I conversing and saying, ‘I stabbed my mother.' It was strange. I wouldn't say he was rambling, because we could understand it, but he was saying it in an odd way."

Police said there was no history of calls, no protective order and no one so far, can pinpoint a reason Stick would murder his mother.

As for Matt's hobby, they say it just seems to be a mirror for this case.

"It fits with what we're seeing. It's a unique hobby, a unique individual, a unique murder," Walker said.

Again, if anyone finds a knife or cell phone in the Brookside area, call police.

Police said, as much as they'd like answers in this case, they probably won't be forthcoming until the case works its way through the court system.
