A Broken Arrow man is in jail for driving under the influence after crashing into a Tulsa police car and injuring the officer behind the wheel.

Witnesses say Billy Joe Thompson, 48, was driving southbound on Mingo Road about 2 a.m. when he missed a turn at 7th Street. They report he then put his Chevrolet Trailblazer in reverse and backed up at a high speed, hitting a marked Tulsa police car.

The Tulsa Police officer was on her way home from a shift, headed southbound on Mingo. Her Dodge Charger went off the road and came to a stop in the grass, airbags deployed.

She was taken to the hospital with injuries to her hand and foot, and a possible broken nose, according to Corporal Ken Simpson with the Tulsa Police Department.

Police say Thompson continued east on 7th Street. Officers found his Trailblazer parked at an apartment complex at 9th and 101st East Avenue. He was booked into Tulsa County Jail on complaints of leaving the scene of an injury accident, driving under the influence of alcohol, possession of marijuana and failure to signal a left turn.

A man and woman in Thompson's SUV were questioned and released.
