Verizon is bringing 500 new jobs to the region, establishing a financial services hub at its facility at Cherokee Industrial Park in Tulsa.

Local leaders say it's the best economic news they've heard in years.

It was hoped the presence of Governor Mary Fallin at Friday's news conference signaled something big, and the Governor delivered, announcing 500 new jobs for Tulsa.

"And not only jobs that you're providing—good paying jobs," said Governor Fallin.

Verizon already employs 900 people at the Cherokee Industrial Park. The 500 new employees will be in finance and accounting.

"These positions will be part of Verizon's financial services organization, and they come to Tulsa because of a decision to bring employees together in a financial services hub here," said Michelle Robinson, of Verizon.

Robinson says that decision was a year in the making.

She says Verizon looked at locations nationwide... considering everything from the local talent pool to the cost of living.

And Tulsa, she says, emerged as the ideal location.

"I share that to stress that Verizon doesn't choose places randomly. We choose Tulsa for a number of very sound business reasons, including the fact that its a fantastic place to live, work and generally do business," Robinson said.

Tulsa's Chamber of Commerce says Verizon's 500 jobs will generate another 600 jobs in the area, with an impact to the regional economy of more than $60 million a year.

After years of cut backs and shrinking revenues, local leaders say it's a day to celebrate.

"Whether you're from Jenks, Owasso or Tulsa, it makes no difference. This is a good news announcement for the whole region's economy," said Owasso City Manager Rodney Ray.

Mayor Dewey Bartlett said Verizon's announcement helps solidify Tulsa's economic development reputation.

The Tulsa office will handle accounts payable, accounting and other select finance jobs.

Verizon says hiring for the new positions will begin later this year.
