A Checotah family is dealing with the loss of a child, and hoping to turn his death into something positive.

They've created a charity, so their son's memory will live on by helping others.

Proud parents of a happy healthy baby boy, Jacob Dillon Garrett, Joe and Sherill Garrett had blended their two families. When Jake was born, he became the glue that held them together.

Seven and a half months later, he lay down to take a nap and never woke up.

"So in our journey through this grief and healing process, I reached out to my friends on Facebook and said, ‘What do I do?'" Sherill said.

Well, it turns out, Sherill had always toyed with the idea of a formal dress lending closet of some kind for prom dresses.

"A friend in Texas said you should really do this and call it ‘Dresses for Jake's Dates.'"

So, they started a Facebook page, and began talking about Jake and the project has since grown.

"The support has come from people who—‘I want to help your cause, I want to comfort you,' and they do that by giving us a dress, or jewelry or a handbag, or a like on Facebook," Sherill said.

The lending closet has grown from one dress to more than 200. They've been sent from several states and from all across Oklahoma.

They are there for girls who need to borrow a dress for a special occasion, but have no other way to get one.

Intended as a way to pay it forward and honor her son, Dresses for Jake's Dates has become a living legacy for a little boy.
