A 61-year-old Delaware County man is in jail after investigators say he attacked his son-in-law with an axe.

The altercation started after he accused his daughter of stealing his prescription drugs.

Clarence Newby was arrested by Delaware County Sheriff's Deputies and Colcord Police at his home on the north edge of Colcord late Monday night.

The Sheriff's Office said Newby called at 9:37 p.m. and reported his daughter, Teresa Sixkiller, had stolen his prescription drugs. While on the phone with the dispatcher, Newby reportedly had an argument with his daughter, but the Sheriff's Office said she had left the by the time the call ended.

About five minutes later, Newby called back and told the dispatcher his daughter and her husband, Cecil Sixkiller, Jr., had shown back up. Newby told them, "He tried to hit me and I hit him with a chopping axe," the Sheriff's Office said.

Police stopped Cecil and Teresa Sixkiller as they were coming to the central part of Colcord and found Cecil bleeding severely from an open laceration on his arm. Once he was stabilized by first responders, he was flown to a hospital in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

The Sheriff's Office said Cecil Sixkiller was in stable condition Monday, following a surgery to repair the injury to his arm.

Newby was arrested a short time after his second call and was booked on complaints of felonious assault with a dangerous weapon. Officers secured a search warrant for his home and recovered the double bit axe, along with other evidence.

The Delaware County Sheriff's Office said Newby will be arraigned on multiple charges.
