Some folks received another good soaking overnight as you can see from the 24 hour precipitation map on the right, courtesy of the OK Mesonet. Some of our western neighbors also received some very beneficial rains as well, but they still need a more widespread rainfall event to bring the drought relief that is so desperately needed. Notice the second map on the right which shows the drought situation across the state as of early this week.

The system that brought the overnight showers/storms will be slowly moving on eastward today keeping the eastern half of the state under cloudy skies till late in the day. Lingering drizzle or some light showers will also prevail until early this afternoon and the combination of clouds, light northerly winds, and some patchy light rain will keep our daytime highs in the 60s.

Clearing skies are expected by this evening and clear skies for the overnight hours. The moisture that is in place after the rainfall together with light and variable winds overnight and clear skies all add up to what should be some locally dense fog for the late night hours and into the morning of Sunday. The fog should burn off rather quickly though leaving us with bright sunny skies for the rest of the day. Temperatures will start off in the upper 40s and top out in the upper 70s to near 80. Our winds will return to a light southerly direction during the day as well.

Sunny skies and brisk southerly winds on Monday will result in a very Spring-like day with morning lows in the upper 50s and daytime highs reaching the lower 80s. More of the same is expected on Tuesday although temperatures may even be a few degrees warmer, particularly at night.

Then, it gets interesting again. The longer range guidance has been flip-flopping all over the place regarding a very strong system aloft that will be coming our way. The implications this system will have on our weather are significant depending on its eventual location which ranges from NW OK(ECMWF) to W Kentucky(GFS) by Saturday morning. Run to run continuity has also been inconsistent so the time period beyond Wednesday is a very low confidence time frame.

There is a general consensus that the system will push another strong cold front through the state late Wednesday afternoon or evening. Warm, windy conditions will precede the cold front along with a chance of showers/storms as the front arrives. After that, about the only certainty is that Thu-Sun will be much cooler than normal once again but how much cooler and how wet are both very uncertain. For now, will try to split the difference between the two and have at least some lingering showers going into the coming weekend along with the much below normal temperatures.

Speaking of below normal temperatures, April of this year is so far running more than 5 degrees below normal and nearly 10 degrees cooler than April of last year. Also, the period from Mar 1-Apr 26 of this year is running nearly 12 degrees cooler than the comparable period of last year. Ah, OK weather, gotta love it!
