Golden Shovel Awarded To Tulsa's Best Composter

Not all dirt is created equal, and the only way to decide who has the best is with the Cherry Street Farmer's Market second annual "compost competition."

The Metropolitan Environmental Trust, Tulsa Master Gardeners and the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service got down and dirty to crown the "Green Country Master of Composting" on Saturday.

Ten people bagged up a sample of their compost mixture. They say composting isn't only good for the earth, but for your garden too.

"It just takes an extra effort at the front end and a decision to not put it into the garbage, not put it back into the landfill," said composter James Wineiger. "Even things like newspaper and office paper, we shred all that and put it right into our compost and mix that in as well."
