A motorcycle rider was killed Wednesday evening, after laying down his bike in an attempt to avoid hitting a car.

Police say the rider, Zachary Edens, 22, was driving north on South Peoria Avenue when a car turning southbound from 56th Street pulled out in front of him.

Edens laid his bike down and skidded underneath the car and suffered a fatal head injury, police say. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

The driver of the car was identified as Neva Whiteman, 36. Police say Edens was not wearing a helmet.

Peoria was closed in both directions in that area and traffic was diverted while police investigated the accident.
