8 Tulsa Athletes Treated For Heat At Felix Jones Football Camp

Saturday's heat took a toll on some high school football players taking part in the Felix Jones football camp held Saturday at Booker T. Washington High School.

Eight teenagers were treated at S.E. Williams Field for heat-related illness. None of the players was hospitalized.

An EMSA spokesperson said they first treated four players at about 11 a.m. A crew stayed at the school and treated four additional players.

EMSA issued a heat alert following their trip to the football field Saturday. It was the third heat alert of 2013.

The football and life skills academy was in Tulsa for the fifth year, offering a free skills camp for local players in partnership with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Felix Jones, running back for the Philadelphia Eagles and former Booker T. star, brought several other NFL players to Tulsa to encourage student athletes to fulfill their goals in sports and beyond the field.

News On 6 Sports reporter Harold Kuntz was at the camp earlier in the day and said camp organizers were taking every precaution to keep the students safe in the heat. Temperatures were in the low 90s.

OSU defensive tackle Calvin Barnett, a Booker T. graduate, came home over the weekend to help with the camp.

"What the kids got to understand, you got to really make sure you stay hydrated -- water, Gatorade, everything," Barnett said. "By being young, you don't really know how to take care of your body, but by doing experiences like this, you'll learn. Because a lot of them [have] been up here cramping up today and things like that. It teaches that you [have] to eat right and take care of your body."

Barnett says kids playing in camps need to be practicing on and off the field when it comes to staying healthy in the Oklahoma heat.

"They really have to keep Gatorade, electrolytes, water, all that good stuff -- fruit, vegetables," Barnett said. "You have to eat right."

A trainer on site said a little stretching can go a long way.

"Make sure you do some stretches before you come," Professional Athletic Trainer Igor Carvalho said. "Stretch your hamstrings, everything before you come to camp. Make sure that you eat well. You know, don't try to eat food that's not going to help you during that six hours that you're working out."
