OKC Officers Not Charged In Beating Of Man At Illinois River

Two Oklahoma City police officers accused of attacking a man at the Illinois River will not face charges in the case.

It happened on August 3 at the Illinois River, about 170 miles away from Oklahoma City near Tahlequah.

Yohawna Lewis said as he and his girlfriend were arguing, a group of three men, including two off-duty Oklahoma City police officers, stopped to intervene.

Lewis said one of the men confronted him, "aggressively started pushing me around, telling me he was a cop and that I was going to do what he said." He said one of the men put him in a choke hold while another kicked him.

The two officers were then put on administrative leave following the incident.

On Monday, the Cherokee County District Attorney decided to not charge the officers. The decision is based on the findings from the Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission.

The Oklahoma City Police Department is conducting an internal investigation. Those officers are on paid leave.
