Two men are in custody after a short chase through a North Tulsa neighborhood, which police say started when an officer spotted a stolen car.

Sgt. Chris Witt said a traffic officer was behind a car with suspicious tags Thursday afternoon. Witt said the officer ran the tags, only to find out it was reported stolen. He said the officer followed the car from the west side of the Inner Dispersal Loop to the Peoria exit.

Police say that officer and another officer then turned on their lights and sirens to try to pull the car over, but the driver sped off into the neighborhood.

After a short chase through the neighborhood, which reached speeds between 50 and 60 miles an hour, according to the arrest report, the driver crashed into a guide wire on a utility pole near East King Street and North Owasso Avenue.

He said the passenger, 50-year-old Brett Johnson, stayed in the car and was taken into custody, but the driver, Bobby Bailey, 44, ran off and tried to hide in a car parked in a nearby yard.

Sgt. Witt said a K-9 officer helped track Bailey down and he eventually surrendered to police.

Bailey was booked into the Tulsa County jail on complaints of possession of a stolen vehicle, eluding, driving under suspension, and driving without insurance and with expired tags.

Jail records show Bailey had just been released from jail the day before. He was arrested on August 24, for probation violation, after court documents show he failed to pay fines on a number of previous convictions. Those convictions included embezzlement, DUI, car burglary, and numerous drug charges, among others.

Johnson was booked on complaints of having expired tags and no proof of insurance and bonded out Thursday night.
