A juvenile jumped inside a still-running ambulance parked outside a convenience store and took it on a joyride that ended with a crash on a highway, according to Oklahoma City police.

Around 11:45 p.m., EMSA medics stopped at an On-Cue gas station at S.W. 59th Street and Western. While one medic went inside, the other stood in the parking lot near the ambulance.

Somehow, the teenager managed to jump inside the ambulance and speed away before the medic in the parking lot could stop him. He drove onto Interstate 44, but soon lost control and hit a light pole. The ambulance rolled over, but no other vehicles were hit.

Police were able to track the stolen ambulance using the vehicle's GPS tracking device. When News 9 asked why the ambulance was left running, police said that's standard procedure.

"The ambulance, it's typically left running," said Lt. Kevin Parton. "It has a pretty huge electrical load on the ambulance, and it has to maintain its internal temperature. The ambulance was running. The gentleman just walked by and got in the ambulance and just drove off."

The juvenile who stole the ambulance has not been identified. Police say he was either drunk or high on drugs. He was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries.
