A section of a Broken Arrow street got a new name Friday. New street signs went up, turning College Street into Helen Gates Way, between Lynn Lane and County Line Road.

Helen Gates was the woman behind the Gatesway Foundation, a center for adults with developmental disabilities.

The organization celebrated its 50th anniversary Friday.

"What it was from the very beginning, is Helen had her own set of standards and it was doing it Helen Gates' way," said Gatesway Foundation's CEO, Judi Myers. "You didn't have an option. You were going to do it the best. You were going to put your thinking cap on, if something didn't work right, and try it another way. And so it just became, 'We're doing it the Helen Gates way,' and so the name came up Gatesway."

Gatesway started as a residential center, but has expanded to include employment, transition and adult day programs.
