The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Saturday evening through Sunday evening for much of eastern Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas.

News On 6 meteorologist Mike Grogan says the forecast has March coming in like a lion as a powerful storm system is on its way in from California. Grogan says it will bring needed moisture, but it will meet up with Arctic air causing the potential for sleet and possibly ice by Saturday night.

The NWS is expecting sleet and freezing rain.

Counties under the winter storm warning include: Craig, Delaware, Mayes, Nowata, Osage, Owatta, Pawnee, Rogers, Tulsa and Washington and Benton County in Arkansas.

Earlier the NWS was forecasting a half-inch to inch and a half of sleet and around a quarter-inch or less of ice accumulation.

The National Weather Service in Tulsa issued a timeline for the winter weather event in Northeastern Oklahoma:

Rain begins Saturday evening transitioning to freezing rain and sleet late Saturday. Sleet falling in morning hours of Sunday then moving into southeastern Oklahoma in afternoon. Gradual change to light snow and sleet Sunday evening.

Be sure to stay weather aware and keep checking back for updates - especially if you have travel plans on Sunday. Roads and bridges may become slick, and power outages due to ice on power lines are possible.
