Lori and Don Whitton said their Chihuahua, Speedy, went missing in January 2012 after he escaped their fenced backyard. The Whittons said if Speedy had not been micro chipped, he would not have returned home.

The Whittons said they used several search efforts to find Speedy including posters, rewards, Craigslist, newspaper ads and checking with the Oklahoma City animal shelter.

On March 10, 2014, Trey Amrein with the Norman Animal Welfare Center called the Whittons to tell them they had Speedy at their facility. The dog was brought to the center by two University of Oklahoma students who said they found him on campus and brought him in to be checked for a microchip.

The Whittons believe Speedy was found and adopted during the time he was missing, because he was found wearing a rabies tag from a Midwest City veterinary clinic.

The family urges pet owners to get their animals micro chipped and to renew the chip's registration each year. Registering the microchip links it's ID to your name, current phone numbers, emergency contacts and other vital information.
