A human skull found in a dump outside Skiatook is historic, the Washington County Sheriff's Office announced Monday afternoon.

A man brought the skull into the Skiatook police station earlier this month, telling police he'd found it on private property in a trash dump. Authorities searched the area for additional bones, but nothing was ever found.

Captain Gary Miller said the State Medical Examiner's Office gave them the preliminary results of testing which show the skull is too old to be part of any active investigation.

"When she's done with the report, we may have a better idea just how old it is," he said.

The preliminary report also did not say whether the skull belonged to a man or woman. Miller said when the complete report is released, that information will be given to the media.
