Owasso Police evacuated a section of the Greens Apartments after discovering what appeared to be a large pipe bomb in a trash dumpster Friday morning.

The Tulsa Police Department's bomb squad was called to the complex and determined the device was not an explosive, but rather a launching device. That is similar to an explosive device but lacks an accelerant, according to Lieutenant Nick Boatman with the Owasso Police Department.

Deputy Police Chief Jason Woodruff said a resident found the device in the dumpster at about 7 a.m. and called police.

Police evacuated eight apartment buildings near the dumpster as a precaution. Residents were moved to the complex's clubhouse.

Boatman said in light of recent incidents in Owasso, an alert neighbor called officers in after seeing something that looked suspicious.
