Hundreds of veterans, Guard and Reserve members are now, or will soon be, looking for a job. That can be a difficult task without a little help. But many were offering a leg up in form of a big military job fair in Broken Arrow, Thursday.

More than 80 agencies and companies signed up for an opportunity to put Oklahoma's veterans to work. Colonel Warren Griffis, the Director of the Oklahoma Guard's Employment Coordination Program, called it a “hiring event.”

It focuses not just on the available jobs, but also on getting hired for one of them.

"I'm just looking for a position that will give me more of a challenge; that will advance my career," said six year military veteran, Jill George.

She is currently in the Guard, with a college degree, and she kind of liked the job fair/hiring event format.

"I think it's worth the time because you get exposed to companies you may not have known about," she said.

There are nearly 200 hundred veterans, transitioning members, National Guard and Reservists who were taking advantage of the opportunities.

"Two simple requirements: have positions available at the time of the event, and be willing to conduct an interview if you find a good candidate," Griffis said.

There were some filling out applications, passing out resumes, checking out available positions and just making good contacts. Griffis said the employers are as enthusiastic as the pool of potential employees.

“Not just because they have jobs, but they want to do the best for our veterans Guard and Reservists," he said.
