West Tulsa Water Line Break Strands Drivers In High Water

Two drivers were rescued from their cars after being stranded in high water at I-44 and 33rd West Avenue Thursday morning. The Tulsa Fire Department got the drivers out of their cars safely just after 8 a.m.

City officials say a 12-inch water line broke causing water to flood 33rd West Avenue directly under I-44.

Dressed in just her robe and flip flops, Cassie Hill said she wasn't prepared to encounter a rush of water when she took her nephew to work.

"Mine just died," Hill said.

She had just driven on the road before 8 a.m. and it wasn't a problem, but when she came back through, there was water across the road. She said she thought she could make it through the water, but her car's engine died, stranding her in the high water.

"There were little cars, I mean little Hondas going straight through it and I was like, ‘oh I can make it,’ but no I didn't,” said Hill.

Police closed the road to traffic.

The city of Tulsa says six residents and one business customer are without water because of the break. They says workers are expected to have the break fixed by late Thursday.
