The Tulsa Fire Department was called to a building fire and hazardous chemical spill in the 400 block of South St. Louis shortly after 7 a.m. Monday. Smoke and flames were visible upon their arrival, according to Captain Jarrod Perry with the TFD.

The business - identified as Southwest United Industries - is located near 4th and Utica in an industrial area. HazMat was called out to handle an acid spill that has been contained.

According to their web site, Southwest United Industries does metal finishing services and aviation component repair. It also does all types of painting including dry film lube and Teflon. It's been in business since 1953.

Perry said the cause of the fire and type of acid that spilled are still under investigation. They haven't determined whether the fire was caused by a manufacturing process or if the chemicals themselves caught fire.

"Any kind of acid is dangerous to our crews and anybody in the initial area," Perry said. "Especially the smoke that's a byproduct."

The first firefighters into the building were hosed off for their safety after being exposed to the smoke and fumes, Perry said. They were sent to a medical facility as a precaution but weren't reporting any symptoms, he said.

No injuries have been reported.
