Oklahoma Lefties Celebrate National Left-Handers Day

Sometimes being left-handed can make some feel left out, but Wednesday was a day for them all to stand out, and celebrate National Left-handers Day.

The “troubles” of left-handers really amplify around the beginning of school, especially when they have to sit at right-handed desks.

Jen Speed teaches kindergarten at Kendall-Whittier, she said she has three left-handers in her class and right now they are beginning to perfect their letters and numbers.

"When they are writing with their left hand, they get either marker or pencil on their hand," Speed said.

Lefties know all about that; righties are able to lead the crayon across the paper, while all the lefties drag their hands across what they’ve written.

It’s not something they try to train them out of - if they are lefties, they're lefties - but the subtle reminders of right hand dominance are everywhere:

It's your right, not your left, hand over your heart, as the kids head down the hall to lunch there's a right-handed Cat in the Hat, Will Rogers doing rope tricks right handed and Harry Potter, apparently a right handed broom driver.

But lefties can keep their chin up because the Oval Office belongs to us: Truman, Ford, Reagan, the first Bush, Clinton and Obama are all left handed.

But between kindergarten and the White House, there are lots of left-handed hurdles, including scissors.

"They have trouble with scissors, they are always made for right hands,” said Speed.

Thankfully, she keeps a pair of left-handed scissors around for the 10 percent of lefties in the world.
