Freshman Rachel Thun scored her first collegiate goal to give the Tulsa women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Arkansas State on Sunday afternoon in Jonesboro, Arkansas. TU moved to 2-0 on the season, while ASU fell to 1-1 overall.

“We learned a lot about ourselves today,” coach Kyle Cussen said. “We had a 45 minute weather delay in the second half. The last time we were in a weather delay we lost the game in overtime, but today the girls did a good job of staying focused. They also fought the 110-degree heat and came out on top.”

Thun picked up a forward pass from Madison Smith and found the back of the net at the 70:08 mark to give the Golden Hurricane the 1-0 win.

TU had a 27-5 lead in shots, including a 14-1 advantage in shots on goal, and a 6-1 lead in corner kicks.

Thun had a team-leading eight shots, six of which were on goal, while Tana Dake added four attempts and Smith had three shots. Courtney McKeon earned her first collegiate start, logged all 90 minutes in goal, had one save and earned a shutout.

“It was a big confidence boost for Courtney to get her first start and a shutout, and Tana did a great job in center midfield today,” Cussen said. “We created 27 chances and 14 were on goal, so that is something we improved on from Friday's game. Now we need to get sharper in the final third to prepare for next weekend.”

Tulsa returns to action on Friday against Missouri State. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
