A former Miami resident known for her work overseas in protecting women's rights and preventing domestic violence in centers in Iraq was remembered.

According to KOAM, a week-long remembrance for Fern Holland drew crowds to remember the legacy she brought to the community.

DeeDee Cox with the Community Crisis Center said, “I don't think they really know all the things that she did that were so amazing. I don't, I know. I don't guess anyone knows all the things that she did. But as we tell our stories, we improve the picture.”

To honor Holland's legacy, the Community Crisis Center held Fern Holland Remembrance Week, featuring displays of her personal work, photographs and writings, as well as presentations and featured speakers.

Holland was a Tulsa attorney who graduated from Miami High School before being killed by Iraqi gunman near Hillah, about 35 miles south of Baghdad.

She was working as a civilian contractor for the U.S. Department of Defense. She took depositions from torture victims and their families as part of her work.
