Home Depot Investigates Possible Credit Card Data Breach

The Home Depot said it's investigating a possible breach of customers' credit and debit cards.

Hundreds, maybe even thousands of Oklahomans could be affected by this. The Home Depot said it's working with banking partners and law enforcement to investigate the possible breach.

This comes after security analyst Brian Krebs reported on his blog that credit card information was put up for sale Tuesday on an underground website that traffics stolen financial information.

Krebs stated if the breach turns out to be true, it could be larger than the one that affected Target stores last year, in which 40 million credit and debit accounts were hacked.

He went on to say the breach could have started in late April or early May of this year. Analysts believe there's a good chance whoever is behind this possible hacking is also responsible for the breach at Target and PF Changs.

A spokesperson for Home Depot said it can't confirm any data breaches right now, only that it is investigating, but if one is confirmed, affected customers will be notified immediately.

Recently, the Department of Homeland Security announced more than 1,000 U.S. businesses had been infected with software called "Backoff,” which can steal information from point-of-sale machines.

It's not known if the possible breach at The Home Depot is a result of that software.
