As you look at the 24 hour temperature change map, courtesy of the OK Mesonet, it is pretty obvious that some cooler air has spread into NW OK and that cooler air will be spreading on southward across the rest of the state for the overnight hours. This is, of course, due to a long advertised cold front that is pushing across the state as I write and will be well south of the state by morning. Notice the second map, also courtesy of the OK Mesonet, which shows temperatures as of mid-afternoon. Those widespread 90s ahead of the cool front will be replaced by 60s and 70s for Saturday so much cooler air will dominate this weekend. Sunday will start off near 60 followed by some afternoon sunshine and daytime highs near 80 and that will be followed by a brief return to much warmer conditions going into early next week.

This cold front as it pushes across the state is producing some showers/storms at this time, but more widespread rainfall is anticipated later tonight and to start the day Saturday. As the day wears on, the showers should be gradually drifting on southward, but there will be at least a chance of rain up through the noon hour here in Tulsa for you football fans and a somewhat lesser chance in Stillwater for later in the afternoon. Brisk northerly winds for much of the day together with the cloud cover and any lingering showers will certainly make it feel more like football season.

Sunday and Monday look to be dry, but gusty southerly winds returning for Tue and to start the day Wednesday will result in another warm-up with much above normal temperatures once again. Highs well into the 80s to near 90 are expected until the next cold front arrives late Wednesday or that night. This looks to be an even stronger system and will bring with it another chance of showers or storms beginning Tue night and perhaps continuing into the day Friday. Look for Thu/Fri to be much cooler with daytime highs only in the 70s and a gusty northerly wind. That will be followed by the coolest air of the season as we head into that following weekend. In other words, after a brief return to summer-like conditions to start the week, much more fall-like weather will be headed this way for later next week.

In fact, if you look at the last two maps which have the 8-14 day temperature and precipitation trends, it certainly looks very fall-like. Notice the strong signal suggesting below normal temperatures for much of the country including OK.

So, stay tuned and check back for updates.
