Summer heat is still baking Green Country, but by the end of the week, our temperature plunge will leave you searching for your sweaters and craving those pumpkin spiced lattes.  At this time, a stout cold front is racing south across the Plains.  It has already brought accumulating snow to Calgary and flakes have been flying across Montana (and, yes, it's still officially the summer season!)  This cold front means business.  By the time it reaches Oklahoma on Wednesday, storms may be sparked and blustery north winds will funnel in refreshingly cool air.

After Tuesday's heat is behind us, we have one more surge of warmth before that cooler air is spilling into our backyards.  That surge will occur just before the frontal passage midday Wednesday.  It's that heat and moisture that will fuel scattered showers and storms along the front.  The timing of that front isn't super conducive to much rain in Tulsa, but as it slides further south with the afternoon heat, showers and storms will become more likely.  The first attached map shows the most likely zone for rain and a few strong storms in the afternoon.

In the temperature realm, our readings will drop from near 90° early Wednesday afternoon to the upper 50s by Thursday morning.  Thus begins our first extended stretch of fall-like weather.  This cool-down will usher in the new normal for the month.  90s will be hard to come by, although an occasional warm spell will still likely occur here and there well into October.  But the overall message here is that we are now fully on the downhill slide to the coldness of winter.   Even our latest 8-14 Day Outlook features cooler than normal temperatures into the second half of this month.

After an absolutely gorgeous, dry day on Thursday, another reinforcing shot of cool, wet air arrives Friday.  Scattered showers and clouds may keep temperatures well down into the 60s.  It's this system that could bring snowflakes down the lee side of the Rockies even deeper into the U.S.  We might just get the chilly rain out of it, but it will be cold enough to send you searching for blankets and jackets to Friday night football games.  It seems absolutely silly to be digging out the layers in light of these 100° heat indices at the moment!  Temperatures will bottom out Saturday morning in the 50s and possibly upper 40s.  From one extreme to another, this week is definitely a week of change.

Finally, looking ahead to the weekend (never too early, right?), we have outstanding conditions to enjoy.  Some sunshine with cool mornings and mild afternoons will be the story.  Plan to spend some good time outdoors!  We'll be in between storm systems so we shouldn't have to worry much about rain again until next week.  Enjoy the cool-down as the seasons change – just don't be caught off guard by the wild fluctuations this week will offer!

The one thing that isn't wild is the Tropics!  Wednesday is the official peak of Hurricane Season and there isn't even a Tropical Depression in the Atlantic Basin.  So far, the Tropical season has been nice and quiet, but a few tropical waves may lighten up things in the Atlantic before too long.  Be sure to follow me on Twitter: @GroganontheGO and like my page on Facebook!
