A temporary city employee died after being run over by a trash truck, according to Sand Springs police.

Deputy Chief Mike Carter said it happened near the intersection of 41st Street and Highway 97 at about 8 a.m.

Carter said the man identified as 52-year-old Richard Jones of Broken Arrow and his co-workers were using the truck to collect garbage when the accident happened. He said it appears Jones got out of the truck while it was still moving and fell. He was run over by the truck's back wheels.

Police said Jones had been employed as a temporary worker with the City of Sand Springs.

“On behalf of the City of Sand Springs, I wish to express our deep heartfelt sympathy to Richard, his family and all of his co-workers. It is painful to our community to lose a valued member of our city employee family. Richard will be missed by all of us, and we will continue to pray for him and his family in this time of sorrow”. said Elizabeth Gray, Sand Springs City Manager.

Carter said the investigation into the incident continues and the cause of death will be determined by the state Medical Examiner's Office.
