Tulsa Police Captain Hopes Supreme Court Will Hear Case Against TPD

A Tulsa Police captain who was disciplined for refusing an order to attend an Islamic Appreciation day is taking his case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Captain Paul Fields initially sued the department after being relieved of his command and suspended for 10 days without pay. He said the order to attend the event at a Tulsa mosque conflicted with his religious beliefs.

He lost on appeal after a federal judge ruled that Fields did not have to attend the event but had the option to send others. Or that even if Fields had been ordered to go, he didn't have to take part in the religious services being offered at the event.

Fields wants the high court to decide whether his first amendment rights were violated.

He says the department only punished him after he filed the lawsuit which made his allegations public. Fields says that falls under his right to free speech.
