Rogers County Deputies Pick Up 78 Pounds Of Unwanted Meds At Service Event

For the first time, Rogers County Sheriffs deputies went door-to-door on Saturday picking up unwanted or leftover medications at people's homes.

News On 6 tagged along as deputies met with homeowners trying to get rid of their medications.

County deputies picked up medications from more than 30 homes totaling 78 pounds.

The sheriff's office is trying to get these medications off the streets before they are abused or stolen or sold in drug trafficking.

All residents had to do was pick up the phone and arrange a pickup with the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office will eventually take these pills collected today and have them destroyed by the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics.

Deputies say the whole point of this program is to get these meds out of the home and out of the hands of children.

"Those kids look at that, they see all the pretty colors you know it looks like candy to them,” Rogers County Sheriff Jerry Smittle said. “Everything from a mint to, you've got the blues, you've got the little pretty stripes, that's just phenomenal when you see that,"

This was a one-day event.

I'm told another drug take back event will be held in the spring during a household recycling event.
