Ray Saari led the Tulsa men's soccer team to a 4-2 win over Cincinnati on Saturday night at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 5-4-1 on the season and 1-1 in the American Athletic Conference, while Cincinnati fell to 3-5-2 overall and 0-2 in the league.
“I thought our movement, particularly in the first half, was tremendous,” coach Tom McIntosh said. “As the first half went on, I thought Ray [Saari] really found space and found the pockets we wanted him to play in. We created a lot of chances, 16 shots on goal, tonight. Defensively, we were good throughout most of the night. We made a few mistakes and gave up two goals, but when you only concede six shots, you are doing a good job defensively.”
Cameron Drackett put TU on the board with just 5:26 ticked off the clock as he scored from 15 yards out on a pass from Rollie Rocha. Saari gave the Golden Hurricane a two-goal cushion just 10 minutes later and this time Drackett picked up the assist.
John Manga got one back for the Bearcats as he slotted one in up the middle from nine yards out at the 24:05 mark.
Saari found the back of the net for the second time of the night in the 68th minute off a pass from Geoffrey Dee, and then 10 minutes later, Tony Rocha punched in a goal from 18 yards out.
Manga scored again for Cincinnati in the 88th minute for the final 4-2 score.
Tulsa had a 20-6 lead in shots, including a 16-3 advantage in shots on goal, but the Bearcats had a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Saari led TU with seven shots, five of which were on goal, while Austin Neil came in off the bench and had four attempts. Aymar Sigue, Tony Rocha and Abe Matamoros all had two shots. Brandon Hanat logged all 90 minutes between the posts for one save.
Tulsa will return to action on Wednesday, October 8th against USF. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m. (CT) in Tampa, Fla.
